Hutt Valley Harriers
Wellington Road Champs
18 August 2007
Trentham

Hutt Valley Harriers' dominance of the 13 and under grades in Wellington running this season was underlined at the Wellington road racing championships at Heretaunga on Saturday.

Emily Stotter (HV High School) and Shaun Smith (St Pats Silverstream) took out the respective girls and boys' titles in blustery conditions at Upper Hutt to add to their already extensive list of achievements this season. Stotter, a silver medallist in the year 9 girls race at the national cross country championships earlier this year, was again dominant in her race over 3km. And Smith's win added to a local haul that has included wins in the Dorne Cup and Wellington cross country championships.

Smith led home clubmate Nicholas Sasse by 19sec, completing the 3km course in 10min 39sec, with another Hutt Valley athlete Cameron Murdoch only denied a HVH clean sweep by 2sec.

In the G13 race, Hutt Intermediate pupil Janelle Winter, a member of the Christchurch-bound Wellington inter-provincial cross country squad, took fifth place with Hilton sisters Emma and Katie placing ninth and 10th in their first outing for the club.

Wellington Scottish dominated the senior men's grade with former junior star Tim Hodge taking out his first Wellington senior road title. Hutt's Carl McKenzie broke up the Scottish dominance by taking 7th place in his last competitive appearance for HVH before yesterday jetting out for the United States to take up a track scholarship at Villanova University. Better known as a middle distance athlete, McKenzie's 32min 29sec over 10km underlined his versatility.

Hutt's Sarah Lynskey was denied a medal in the senior women's race by one placing, finishing fourth, with another Hutt athlete Katie Fenton in eighth place over 10km.

And in the masters' women, Anna Robertson took a top 10 placing with 6th in the master's 5km event.

For Hutt Valley Harriers, the Wellington event doubled as their club championships.
