Nick wins GOLD.
18th Commonwealth Games, MCG, Melbourne.
Nick Willis has become the first New Zealander since Anne Audain
(in the 3000m at Brisbane in 1982) to win a gold medal on the
track. The 22-year-old ran a perfect race; staying clear of
trouble as his main trival, Craig Mottram of Australia, was
tripped from behind. The New Zealander sprinted free of the
field at the bell and comfortably held the lead for the last
lap to the tape. He raised his hands in Walker-esque fashion
as he completed his 3.38.49 victory, coming home ahead of his
friend and former Michigan training partner Nathan Brannen of
Canada. Nick now joins a select group of New Zealanders, comprising
Jack Lovelock and Peter Snell, to win an Empire/Commonwealth
Games 1500m gold medal. |
